Group Therapy

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy that involves a group of people working together with one or more therapists to address shared psychological concerns. The group therapy setting provides a supportive environment in which members can share their experiences, learn from others, and receive feedback and support.

Group therapy typically involves the following steps:

  1. Assessment: The therapist will conduct an initial assessment to gather information about each member’s history, symptoms, and goals. This assessment may involve individual meetings with each member or a group intake session.

  2. Group formation: The therapist will form a group of members who share similar concerns or issues. The group size may vary, but typically ranges from 6-12 members. The therapist will consider factors such as gender, age, cultural background, and personality when forming the group.

  3. Group sessions: The group will meet regularly for therapy sessions, which may take place weekly or biweekly. During these sessions, the therapist will use various techniques and strategies to help members work through their issues, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy, or interpersonal therapy.

  4. Interactions and feedback: Members will interact with each other during group sessions, sharing their experiences, thoughts, and feelings. The therapist will provide feedback and facilitate the discussion, helping members to develop insights into their behaviour and relationships.

  5. Homework and practice: The therapist may assign homework or encourage members to practice certain skills or behaviours outside of group sessions. This may include practicing relaxation techniques, challenging negative thoughts, or engaging in social activities.

  6. Progress monitoring: The therapist will regularly monitor each member’s progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed. This may involve modifying the goals of therapy or changing the strategies that are being used.

Overall, group therapy provides a supportive environment in which members can share their experiences, learn from others, and receive feedback and support. Members can benefit from the sense of connection and validation that comes from sharing their experiences with others who are going through similar challenges. By working together, members can develop a greater sense of self-awareness and improve their overall well-being.
